Crossover from Correctional Officer to Law Enforcement Officer―Career Certificate

Program Summary

The purpose of this 518-hour program is to train students who want a dual certification in law enforcement and corrections. The program is designed for students who already have completed a corrections officer program satisfactorily. To take the following courses, students must provide evidence they have completed a Correctional Officer Basic Recruit Training program and passed the State Officer Certification examination. Upon satisfactory completion of the courses listed, students will be eligible to take the State Officer Certification exam for Law Enforcement Officers. Successful scores on both state exams enable the student to receive dual certification as a correctional officer and as a law enforcement officer. This course is the Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission approved Correctional Officer Crossover Training to Florida CMS Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training Program.

Prerequisite Program Requirements

  • A minimum of two months prior the academy start date, candidates should have completed all requirements for the academy.
  • All candidates must successfully pass the FDLE Basic Abilities Test (BAT) in Law Enforcement prior to acceptance into the program unless exempt. This test is offered through PHSC Testing Services and a fee is charged. Refer to the Basic Skills Requirements for Career Certificate Programs under Academic Policies for a full list of exemptions and additional details.
  • All candidates must meet entry requirements, which include a polygraph examination.
  • If a candidate is currently employed as a Correctional Officer, a background check by the employing agency may be accepted in place of the candidate completing certain entry requirements.
  • Application packets will be provided by an academy coordinator upon request.
