Emergency Medical Technician, ATD

Program Summary

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as emergency medical technicians to function at the basic prehospital level and treat various medical/trauma conditions using appropriate equipment and materials. The program prepares students for certification as EMTs in accordance with Chapter 64E-2 of the Florida Administrative Code. The program is approved by the Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and the curriculum adheres to the U.S. Department of Transportation Emergency Medical Technician Basic National Standard Curriculum and National EMS Education Standards. This is the initial level for a career in emergency medical services and the prerequisite for paramedic training and certification.

Upon completion of this ATD, students will earn 12 credits toward the AS degree in Emergency Medical Services.

Admission Information

This program accepts students on a rolling basis, year-round. The last day to apply for the current program year will be posted on the PHSC website. This program offers 18 seats, tentatively beginning Summer at West Campus.

Application and Admission Requirements

Completed PHSC application and application fee.
Official high school transcript indicating graduation and receipt of standard high school diploma, or an official transcript of GED scores indicating receipt of a high school equivalency diploma.
Official transcript from each U.S. college and university attended other than PHSC.
Copy of PHSC-American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center CPR certification, "Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers" is required for course registration. (Expiration date must extend through program completion.).
Complete HSC 2531 - Medical Terminology with a grade of "C" or higher
Students must meet with an advisor to register for EMT courses. All three courses must be taken at the same campus.

Prerequisites:

HSC 2531	Medical Terminology	3 cr.
NCH 0050	Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider CPR	4 hr

CPR certification, PHSC course NCH 0050, American Heart Association, "Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers", is a requirement of this program and must be completed prior to registering for the courses.

Course Requirements:

EMS 1119	Emergency Medical Technology	5 cr.
EMS 1119L	Emergency Medical Technology Laboratory	2.5 cr.
EMS 1431	Emergency Medical Technology Clinical	1.5 cr.

Note(s): A grade of "C" or higher in EMS 1119, EMS 1119L, EMS 1431 and HSC 2531 must be earned in order to receive a Certificate of Completion. Students are then eligible to apply to take the NREMT examination and if successful apply for the Florida State certification.
