This course is designed to provide knowledge of attitudes, skills, and behaviors necessary to promote dental health and prevent dental disease through organized community-based programs. It provides an overview of the dental care delivery system, highlighting social, cultural, economic, and political factors that influence access to care and health disparities, while preparing students to deliver culturally competent, patient-centered dental hygiene services. Students will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating procedures in community oral health programs. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between the community’s overall health and resources and its effect on dental health. Also, this course teaches dental hygienists how to critically evaluate research, interpret scientific literature, and use evidence-based findings to improve patient care and advance the profession.
