Demonstrate Readiness for Coursework
Students planning to enroll in degree programs, including College Career and Technical Certificate programs and/or college-level English and math courses, may be required to take a common placement test for proper placement into coursework. The common placement test assesses reading, writing, and mathematics skills and recommends placement into college-level or developmental education courses. The PERT is the primary common placement test administered by the College. The ACCUPLACER may be used as an alternate test for common placement if the PERT is unavailable. The ACCUPLACER Next Generation Advanced Algebra and Function (AAF) subtest may be administered in addition to common placement testing for placement into advanced mathematics courses.
Students who have a bachelor's degree, transfer credits in English and mathematics, or have previously taken a common placement test within the last two years may submit validated records to Admissions to receive an exception to testing. A list of approved common placement tests and minimum cut scores are found on the Student Placement and Testing Chart on the Testing ServicesCommon Placement web page. Some students may also be exempt from testing including recent graduates of a Florida public high school or active duty military. Speak to Admissions about required documentation for this exemption. Note: Test scores become inactive after two years.
Students enrolling into most technical certificate programs must also take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) within the first six weeks of the program in order to assess basic skills required for certification.
The TABE is designed to test student mastery of basic skills in mathematics, language, and reading. Each program has specific grade-level exit requirements, which may be found on the TABE Exit Requirements for Career and Technical Certificate Programs chart on the Testing Services' TABE - Test of Adult Basic Education webpage. Some Florida high schools and active military students may be exempt from testing. Refer to the "Basic Skills Requirements for Career and Technical Certificate Education" section of the Catalog and Student Handbook for additional information on TABE requirements and exemptions for these programs.
For additional information, students should contact Career and Testing Services.
