CJK 0016 Communications

You will learn several communication skills that will make you safer and more effective in your work as a law enforcement officer. Officers who possess strong interpersonal skills can respond appropriately and potentially avoid triggering or escalating a crisis situation. On the job, law enforcement officers interact with people of many backgrounds, cultures, religious beliefs, and ethnicities. You should be able to adapt your communication style to fit the needs of the people you are interacting with and to fit the situation at hand. Miscommunication may create problems and potential safety issues. Miscommunication happens for different reasons: unclear expression, communication barriers, or a failure to understand the other person’s needs. Having good communication skills will help you avoid misunderstandings and escalation of tense situations. This will help keep you and the community you serve safe.
