Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The purpose of this program is to qualify Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates for expanded career advancement opportunities in leadership, management and education.

Starting in Summer 2020 (2020-3), BSN students can proceed either in full-time or part-time pathways in the program.

Students must start the program by enrolling in NUR 3065C course. Up to the first four courses listed can be taken upon Admission to the Program. Once NUR 3065C has been completed, the student can select which course pathway to take based on offered courses during each term as long as course pre-requisites are met. Students must complete all required General Education courses as identified by Areas I to IV, the following courses are required from Area IV; DEP 2004: Lifespan Development, AMH 2020: History of the United States II or POS 2041: American Federal Government, prior to graduation with the exception of Applied Ethics & Introduction to Statistics, which must be completed prior to enrollment of specific BSN Course, NUR3826 and NUR4164 respectively. Support courses: If a student has not completed Microbiology-didactic and lab, Human Nutrition, and Lifespan and Introduction to Psychology as part of a prior program of study, then these courses must also be completed prior to graduation.  

Civic Literacy Requirements:

Prior to the award of a baccalaureate degree, students initially entering a Florida College System institution in the 2021-22 school year, and thereafter, must demonstrate competency in civic literacy by:

Option 1- complete a. (course) and b. (assessment)

a. Complete one of the following:

  • successfully pass POS 2041 American Federal Government with a grade of "C" or above.
  • successfully pass AMH 2020 History of the United States II with a grade of "C" or above.
  • successfully pass AMH 2020 or POS 2041 via credit-by-exam
    Note: If credit by exam is AP or CLEP then see Option 2

b. Achieve Standard Score on the following Assessment

  • Florida Civic Literacy Exam (Passing Score=60)
    Note: Students who pass the Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE) in high school will still be required to pass an approved course once they enter the Florida College System (FCS).

Option 2 - complete one of the following assessments

Meets both the course and assessment requirement

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Test - Government & Politics: U.S. (Passing Score = 3)
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Test - U.S. History (Passing Score = 4)
  • CLEP American Government (Passing Score = 50)

Students may also elect to complete POS 2041 or AMH 2020 as a transient student online at another institution via the Floridashines transient student request procedure.

* There is not a state requirement governing policy on catalog year in effect for returning students. Policies and procedures relating to assigning catalog years are left to institutions to determine.

** The Florida Department of Education (Department) anticipates entering into rule development to add to the civic literacy requirement as a condition of A.S./A.A.S. degree completion to coincide with general education changes from House Bill 1507, which will be effective with the 2022-23 catalog year.

Dual Enrollment Students and Civic Literacy Competency Requirements

Are dual enrollment students required to pass an approved course and assessment to demonstrate civic literacy competency? No. current dual enrollment students are not required to demonstrate postsecondary civic literacy competency while in high school, including those who are working towards and associate degree. However, current dual enrollment students may opt to take the Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE).

Former dual enrollment students who matriculate to an FCS or SUS institution will have to demonstrate civic literacy competency if they enroll in the degree programs below:

  • Associate Degree (AA, AS, AAS)
  • Baccalaureate Degree (BA, BS, BAS)
Where should dual enrollment students be guided to take the FCLE?

Public School Students

  • At the public high school*
  • At the FCS institution, if available**

Home Education Students

  • At the FCS institution, if available**

Private School Students

  • At the FCS institution, if available**
At the FCS or SUS institution of enrollment.

*Public high schools are not required to offer the FCLE to dually enrolled students but may choose to do so at their discretion.

  • For public school dually enrolled students, this would be through a partnership arrangement with the public high school.
  • For home education or private school dually enrolled students, below are the items that should be considered when deciding to allow them to take the FCLE:

    • How home education/private school students will be informed where they can test
    • How often the test will be available to home education/private school students
    • Procedures for testing home education/private school students
    • How the score will be recorded on a home education/private school student's record

Special Program Requirements:

Students must meet the provision of Florida Statute 1007.262 regarding the statewide foreign language requirement as an exit requirement of the baccalaureate degree. Students must have completed two sequential foreign language courses in high school or at the postsecondary level. American Sign Language I and II is an approved sequence per Florida Statute 1007.2615.

Students who have earned an Associate in Arts degree from a Florida Community College or State University System (SUS) institution before the fall term of 1989, or who have maintained continuous enrollment in a Florida community college or SUS institution before the fall term of 1989 are exempt from the requirement.
